So you're trying to escape Bangalore this October. Honestly, I don't blame you. The traffic on Outer Ring Road has been a nightmare lately. And the weather right now is practically begging for a road trip.

October is easily my favorite time to travel around here. The heavy monsoons are mostly done. So you won't be stuck indoors all day. But everything is still that crazy, vibrant shade of post-rain green.

If you're looking for weekend getaways from Bangalore in October, you've got a ton of options. But here's the thing: everyone else in the city has the exact same idea. If you don't plan a little right now, you'll end up paying ultra-luxury prices for a sad budget hotel room.

Let's talk about where you should actually go. How to get there without losing your mind. And where you should crash.

Coorg & Kabini: The Classic Escapes

I know Coorg is a bit of a cliché. But there's a reason for that. For 2 day trips from Bangalore, it just works. The drive is about 5 to 6 hours. That's assuming you don't get stuck behind a massive line at the Mysore highway toll booths.

If you're driving, take your own car. Or book an outstation cab from the city. Don't rely on getting local cabs once you're up in the hills. It's a massive headache.

If you're going the ultra luxury hotel route, places like Taj Madikeri or Evolve Back are incredible. But they cost a bomb. Honestly, I prefer finding a decent mid-range homestay on a working coffee estate. You get home-cooked pandi curry. And you wake up to zero traffic noise. Just double-check if they have generator backup. Power cuts in the hills are a very real thing.

If you want wildlife instead of coffee, head down to Kabini. It's expensive, I won't lie. But if you're celebrating an anniversary, or just want to splurge on a luxury wildlife resort, it's totally worth it. You can't just wander into the forest though. You have to book safaris through the jungle lodges. Keep that in mind before you book a random budget hotel nearby. You'll realize you can't actually get into the park to see any elephants.

Chikmagalur & Sakleshpur: Zero Cell Reception

When friends ask me for weekend getaways near Bengaluru where they can just read a book and do absolutely nothing, I always say Chikmagalur or Sakleshpur.

Sakleshpur is closer. You can usually drive there in about 4 hours. It's filled with family friendly hotels and nature stays. The roads are mostly good until the last few kilometers. Those almost always turn into a bumpy dirt track leading to whatever estate you booked.

Chikmagalur is a bit further. But it has way more accommodation options. Here's a tip if you hate driving: take the KSRTC Airavat bus. It's super comfortable, air-conditioned, and drops you right in town. From there, ask your resort to arrange a pickup. For stays, there are some okay budget hotels in the main town. But you really want to be out in the hills. Look for places towards Mullayanagiri. Just be warned: cell reception is practically non-existent up there. Tell your boss you'll be unreachable.

Mysore: The Zero-Stress Family Trip

Look, sometimes you just don't have the energy for a winding hill station drive. If you're traveling with kids or older parents, Mysore is your absolute best bet for October trips.

The easiest way to get there? The Vande Bharat or Shatabdi train. It takes about two hours from Krantivira Sangolli Rayanna station. You get a reserved seat. And you completely skip the expressway traffic. Plus, train travel with kids is way easier than strapping them into a car seat for three hours.

Mysore has accommodations for literally every budget. You want luxury? Stay at the Lalitha Mahal. Want a reliable, clean spot? There are dozens of mid-range, family friendly hotels right near the palace. October is Dussehra season though. So Mysore goes completely crazy. It's beautiful, and the palace is lit up every single night. But hotels will sell out months in advance. If you're going during the festival weeks, you need to book right this second.

Gokarna: When You Actually Need a Beach

Gokarna is a stretch for a normal two-day weekend. It's a solid 8 to 9-hour drive. But if you have a long weekend in October, it is amazing. The monsoon has officially retreated. And the ocean is calm enough to actually swim in.

Don't bother booking flights to Goa and driving down. It's a waste of money and time. Book an overnight sleeper bus instead. You leave Bangalore at 9 PM. And wake up to the smell of salt water.

For stays, Gokarna is interesting. You have ultra-budget backpacker shacks right on Kudle or Om beach. Great if you're in your twenties and don't mind a shared bathroom. If you're past that phase of life (like me), look for the nicer resorts perched on the cliffs. There are plenty of mid-range resorts with pools and AC. And yes, you need AC. October days on the coast are incredibly humid.

Pondicherry: Croissants and Cheap Beer

If you're craving French architecture, good bakeries, and cheaper drinks, Pondicherry is always a solid option. It's a 6 to 7-hour drive from Bangalore.

But honestly, if you're exhausted and just want to get there, you can catch a quick flight. There are occasionally short hopper flights to Puducherry airport. Or you can grab one of the many cheap flights into Chennai and take a cab down the East Coast Road. The coastal drive from Chennai is gorgeous.

You basically have two choices for where to sleep: White Town or Auroville. White Town is full of restored heritage hotels. They're a bit pricey. But you can walk to all the cafes and the promenade. If you're on a budget, look for guesthouses around Auroville. It's quieter, surrounded by trees, and very chill. Just rent a scooter to get around. Local autos will overcharge you like crazy.

Wayanad: A Quick Hop Over the Border

I have a love-hate relationship with Wayanad. The place is absolutely stunning, especially in October when the waterfalls are still completely full from the monsoon. But the town is very spread out.

If you just want a resort to lock yourself in for the weekend, this is the place. Wayanad has some of the best treehouses and jungle resorts in the south. Many of them are all-inclusive. That's honestly a lifesaver, because finding a good restaurant outside the main towns can be tough.

Here's the most important thing: the drive goes through the Bandipur forest. That means the road closes at night. Do not try to drive through after 9 PM. Or you'll be sleeping in your car at the border check-post until morning. Also, the roads inside Wayanad can be narrow, steep, and a bit scary. If you aren't a confident hill driver, definitely hire a cab from Bangalore for the whole trip.

Whatever you decide, just get out of the city for a bit. The weather right now is too good to waste at a crowded mall in Indiranagar. Figure out your budget. Decide if you want to drive, or let someone else do the navigating. And book something before everything decent disappears.

Have a great trip. And let me know where you end up!
