All Saints Church - A Historic Wooden Church in Shillong

The original All Saints Church was constructed in 1877 but was completely destroyed during the great Assam earthquake of 1897, a catastrophic event that leveled much of Shillong. The resilient local community and British officers rebuilt the church at its present location in 1902. Constructed with wood and earthquake-resistant techniques learned from the disaster, it has stood for over a century. It was originally an Anglican church and continues to be an important spiritual center for the Protestant community in the city, holding regular services and events.

All Saints Church is significant for its unique architectural style; it is one of the few remaining all-wood churches from the British colonial period in India. Its history is deeply tied to Shillong's resilience, having been rebuilt after the devastating 1897 earthquake. For the local Christian community, it is a cherished place of worship and a symbol of faith. For visitors and historians, it serves as a tangible link to Shillong's past as the summer capital of British Assam, preserving the architectural and cultural heritage of that era.
