    About the Destination

    Overview

Amer Fort, also known as Amber Fort, is a massive fort-palace complex located on a hill overlooking Maota Lake. Built from pale yellow and pink sandstone and white marble, it is a primary example of Rajput architecture. The fort is divided into four main sections, each with its own courtyard. Visitors enter through the Suraj Pol (Sun Gate), which leads to Jaleb Chowk, the first main courtyard where armies would hold victory parades. From here, a grand staircase leads to the main palace complex. Inside, you will find impressive structures like the Diwan-i-Aam (Hall of Public Audience) with its rows of pillars, and the ornate Ganesh Pol, a magnificent gateway that provides access to the private palaces of the Maharajas. The most famous attraction within the fort is the Sheesh Mahal (Mirror Palace), where the walls and ceilings are covered with intricate mirror mosaics that glitter with the light of a single candle. You can also explore the Sukh Niwas (Hall of Pleasure), which has a clever natural air conditioning system. The expansive ramparts offer great views of the surrounding hills and the city.

    Visitor Tips

    • • Visit between 8 AM and 10 AM to avoid the midday heat and the largest crowds.
    • • Wear comfortable walking shoes as the terrain is steep and cobbled.
    • • Hire an official government-approved guide or rent an audio guide at the entrance for a detailed historical context.
    • • Carry a water bottle, sunscreen, and a hat, especially from March to October.
    • • For photography, the best light is in the early morning or late afternoon. Ganesh Pol and Sheesh Mahal are popular spots.
    • • Consider taking a jeep up to the fort instead of an elephant ride for a quicker and more ethical option.
    • • Book tickets for the evening Sound and Light Show in advance, especially during peak season.
    • • Keep some cash handy for small purchases, water, and guide fees, as network connectivity can be poor for digital payments.

    Rules & Restrictions

    • • Drones are strictly prohibited.
    • • Do not touch the mirror work, frescoes, or ancient carvings.
    • • Photography with large tripods may require special permission.
    • • No smoking inside the fort complex.
    • • No outside food is allowed in the main palace areas.

    Safety Information

    • • Beware of unofficial guides and touts at the entrance; hire only government-approved guides from the official ticket counter.
    • • Stay hydrated, especially during the summer, by carrying a water bottle.
    • • The fort has many steep staircases and uneven paths; watch your step, especially with children and senior citizens.
    • • Be cautious of the monkeys in the area; do not feed them and keep your food items secure.
    • • Secure your personal belongings like cameras and wallets, as the fort can get very crowded.
    • • First aid is available at the fort for minor medical issues.
    • • If you choose the elephant ride, ensure you follow the mahout's instructions for safety.

The monsoon season (July to September) brings rain, which can make the stone pathways slippery but also offers lush green views. The winter season is the peak tourist time, so expect larger crowds.
    • Peak Crowd: November to January, long weekends, and during festivals like Diwali and Christmas. The pleasant weather attracts the highest number of tourists.
    • Moderate Crowd: February, March, and October. Weekdays are generally less crowded than weekends.
    • Low Crowd: April to June due to the extreme summer heat, and July to September during the monsoon season.
