Anakkara - The Aromatic Spice Village of Thekkady

Anakkara has long been a traditional agricultural village, historically significant for its role in the spice cultivation of the Idukki district. For centuries, its economy was centered on growing and trading spices like cardamom and pepper. In recent decades, with the growth of tourism in nearby Thekkady, Anakkara has emerged as an eco-tourism destination. The Kerala government and local communities have promoted it as part of the 'Spice Tourism' circuit, focusing on sustainable practices and offering visitors an authentic experience of the region's agricultural heritage. This shift has helped preserve its traditional character while providing new economic opportunities for its residents.

Anakkara's significance lies in its role as an authentic center for spice cultivation, offering a genuine alternative to the more commercial tourist spots in Thekkady. It is important for sustainable and eco-tourism, showcasing traditional farming methods that have been passed down through generations. For visitors, it provides a direct connection to the source of the world-famous Malabar spices. The village also contributes to the preservation of the region's unique biodiversity and offers a peaceful environment for nature lovers, making it a key part of the cultural and natural landscape of the Idukki highlands.
