Overview

Athirapally Falls is the largest waterfall in Kerala, located on the Chalakudy River. Originating from the upper reaches of the Western Ghats, the river cascades down from a height of about 80 feet, creating a powerful and wide spectacle often compared to Niagara Falls. The experience for visitors is multi-faceted. Upon entering, a paved path leads you through a light forest to the top of the falls, where you can see the river gathering force before it plunges. From this viewpoint, you get a broad perspective of the landscape.

Best Time to Visit

The ideal time to visit Athirapally Falls is from September to January. During this post-monsoon period, the waterfall is full and powerful, and the surrounding greenery is lush. The weather is pleasant for the walk and trek. The monsoon months, from June to August, offer the most spectacular, roaring view of the falls, but heavy rains can make the trek to the base slippery and risky, sometimes leading to its closure. The summer months, from February to May, have considerably less water flow.
Peak Crowd: October to January, especially on weekends and public holidays, due to pleasant weather and excellent water flow.
Moderate Crowd: June to September, as the monsoon attracts visitors wanting to see the falls in full force, and February to March.
Low Crowd: April to May, when the heat is high and the water volume is at its lowest.

How to Reach

Air

Cochin International Airport (COK) is the nearest airport, located about 40 km away. From the airport, it takes around 1.5 hours to reach the falls by taxi.

Train

The closest railway station is Chalakudy (CKI), 30 km away. For better connectivity, major stations are Thrissur (TCR) at 60 km and Ernakulam Junction (ERS) in Kochi at 70 km. Taxis and buses are available from all stations.

Road

Athirapally is connected by road via State Highway 21 from Chalakudy. It is approximately 70 km from Kochi and 60 km from Thrissur. The route is scenic and can be covered by car, taxi, or bus.

Local Transport

From Chalakudy town, the main transport options are taxis and public buses. State-run KSRTC buses frequently travel between Chalakudy bus stand and Athirapally.
