Baba Budangiri - Chikmagalur's Sacred Hills and Coffee Origin

The history of Baba Budangiri is linked to the 17th-century Sufi saint, Baba Budan. According to legend, he smuggled seven coffee beans from the port of Mocha, Yemen, while returning from Hajj. He planted them on the slopes of these hills, which is considered the origin of coffee cultivation in India. The hills were subsequently named after him. The cave shrine itself has a much longer history and has been a site of worship for centuries. The place, also known as Dattatreya Peetha, has been a center of pilgrimage and has seen periods of shared reverence, which continues to be a defining characteristic of its identity.
