Basilica of Bom Jesus - Goa's Famed UNESCO Heritage Church

The Basilica of Bom Jesus, located in Old Goa, is a landmark of Christian history in India and a prime example of Baroque architecture. Its most striking feature is the exterior, made of laterite stone, which remains un-plastered, giving it a distinct rustic and imposing look unlike other whitewashed churches in Goa. Inside, the church has a single large nave leading to a magnificently gilded main altar dedicated to the infant Jesus. The interior is a mix of Mosaic-Corinthian styles, with intricately carved wooden pulpits and ornate decorations. Visitors primarily come to see the mortal remains of St. Francis Xavier, housed in a silver casket on the right side of the main altar. The casket itself is a masterpiece of Italian and Goan artistry. The atmosphere inside is one of reverence and history. An art gallery on an upper level displays paintings depicting the life of the saint.
