History

Construction of the Basilica of Bom Jesus began in 1594 and was completed and consecrated in 1605 by Archbishop Aleixo de Menezes. A Jesuit church, it was built to showcase the power and wealth of the Catholic faith. Its name, 'Bom Jesus', means 'Good Jesus' or 'Infant Jesus'. The church gained immense significance after the sacred relics of St. Francis Xavier were transferred here in 1622. It was raised to the status of a minor basilica in 1946 by Pope Pius XII.
