Bela Church - Historic Gothic Church in Kasargod

The history of Bela Church dates back to the late 19th century. Initially, a small chapel with a thatched roof was constructed here around 1880. The present-day Gothic structure was built under the guidance of the Jesuit priest Rev. Fr. John De'Cruz and was completed around 1890. It was established to serve the Roman Catholic community in the northern parts of Kerala and the adjoining Tulu Nadu region. Over the decades, it has grown in prominence and is now considered one of the oldest and most important churches in the Diocese of Mangalore, playing a central role in the spiritual life of the local community.

Bela Church holds immense religious significance, often referred to as the 'Vailankanni of North Kerala'. It is a major pilgrimage destination dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows, attracting thousands of devotees, especially during its annual feast in September. Architecturally, its Gothic design is a notable landmark in the region, distinguishing it from typical Kerala-style structures. For over a century, it has been a spiritual anchor for the Christian community in this part of the country, preserving local traditions and history while serving as a center for worship and community gathering.
