Bolgatty Palace and Island Resort - A Dutch Heritage Hotel in Kochi

Bolgatty Palace was constructed in 1744 by Dutch merchants as a residence for the Dutch Governor. Its strategic island location provided security and controlled access to the harbor. In 1909, the palace was leased to the British, and it became the home of the British Resident of the Cochin state. Following India's independence in 1947, the palace became state property. Later, the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation (KTDC) took over and converted it into a heritage hotel and resort, preserving its historical structure while adding modern amenities like a golf course, marina, and additional accommodation blocks.

The primary significance of Bolgatty Palace lies in its architectural and historical value as one of the oldest Dutch palaces existing outside the Netherlands. It stands as a physical reminder of the Dutch colonial period in Kerala's history. Its successful conversion into a heritage hotel by a government body is a notable example of adaptive reuse of a historic monument.
