    About the Destination

    Overview

The Bonneville Salt Flats is a 30,000-acre expanse of hard, white salt crust located on the western edge of the Great Salt Lake basin in Utah. Formed from the dried remnants of the ancient Lake Bonneville, this barren landscape is completely flat and stretches out to the horizon. Visitors will find a massive white plain that looks like a snow-covered frozen lake but is entirely composed of densely packed salt minerals. During the dry summer months, the salt becomes hard enough to support vehicles, transforming the area into a famous racing venue. When winter rains arrive, a thin layer of standing water covers the flats, creating a giant natural mirror that perfectly reflects the sky and surrounding mountains. The area has no vegetation or wildlife, creating a stark, quiet environment. The primary access point is an Interstate 80 rest area, which provides a safe viewing platform and foot access directly onto the salt crust. Visitors can walk out onto the flats, photograph the unique optical illusions caused by the flat terrain, or simply observe the massive scale of this geological formation.

    Safety Information

    • • Do not attempt to walk barefoot; the salt crystals are extremely sharp and can cause severe cuts
    • • Stay near the designated access roads and do not venture too far out if you are unfamiliar with the terrain
    • • Carry extra drinking water as dehydration happens quickly in the dry, highly exposed environment
    • • Ensure your vehicle has plenty of fuel before leaving Wendover or Salt Lake City, as gas stations are scarce
    • • If driving on the salt, avoid discolored or soft spots to prevent sinking into the underlying mud
