While it's home to the Srinagar International Airport, the district itself offers a quieter alternative to more frequented tourist circuits. The main draws are its pristine natural landscapes. Doodhpathri, known as the 'Valley of Milk', features vast rolling grasslands bisected by the gushing Shaliganga river. Another key destination is Yusmarg, a beautiful meadow surrounded by forests and snow-capped peaks, offering opportunities for pony rides and short treks.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Budgam's meadows is from May to September when the weather is pleasant, and the landscape is lush green. During these months, temperatures are comfortable for sightseeing and outdoor activities. July and August may see some rainfall. For those interested in snow, visiting from December to February is ideal, though access to some higher areas might be restricted due to heavy snowfall. The autumn months of October and November offer clear skies and a different color palette but with colder temperatures.
Peak Crowd: May-July, weekends, and during Eid holidays, as both tourists and locals visit the meadows.
Moderate Crowd: August-October, on weekdays.
Low Crowd: November-April, due to cold weather and potential snow blockades, except for snow enthusiasts.

How to Reach

Air

Srinagar International Airport (SXR), located within Budgam district itself, is the only airport in the Kashmir valley. It is well-connected with major Indian cities.

Train

The nearest major railway station is Jammu Tawi (approx. 270 km away). From Jammu, you need to hire a taxi or take a bus to Srinagar. The Baramulla-Banihal railway line operates within Kashmir, with the nearest station being Budgam Railway Station, but it doesn't connect to the rest of India's network directly.

Road

Budgam is well-connected by road to Srinagar (25 km). You can hire a taxi or take a bus from Srinagar. The region is connected to the rest of India via National Highway 44, which passes through Jammu and Srinagar.

Local Transport

For exploring the district, hiring a private taxi from Srinagar is the most convenient option. Local buses and shared jeeps connect Budgam town to other parts of the valley, but they can be slow and infrequent for tourist spots.
