Chottanikkara Bhagavathy Temple - A Divine Sanctuary in Kochi

The history of the Chottanikkara Temple is rooted in legend. It is believed that the temple's location was once a dense forest where a tribal hunter named Kannappan lived. According to the story, he sacrificed a calf to the goddess, which turned into a stone idol. Later, the area was abandoned until a grass cutter discovered the idol, which began bleeding when struck by her sickle. The present temple structure is believed to have been built over centuries, with significant contributions from various local rulers. The sage Adi Shankaracharya is also associated with the temple, believed to have had a vision of the goddess here. Today, it stands as a major center of worship managed by the Cochin Devaswom Board.

Chottanikkara Temple holds immense cultural and religious significance as one of the most powerful Shakti temples in Kerala. It is renowned for its deity, who is believed to possess healing powers, especially for those with mental illnesses and psychological distress. The unique worship of the goddess in three distinct forms—Saraswati, Lakshmi, and Durga—at different times of the day is a key feature. The 'Guruthi Pooja', a late-night ritual at the Keezhkavu shrine, is a dramatic and powerful ceremony that underscores the temple's reputation as a center for exorcism and spiritual healing, making it a vital pilgrimage destination.
