A grand palace complex on Lake Pichola's banks, showcasing Mewar's history through its remarkable architecture and extensive museum.
The City Palace stands on the eastern bank of Lake Pichola, offering a stunning view of the water and the surrounding Aravalli hills. It is not a single building but a large complex of several palaces, courtyards, and gardens built over nearly 400 years. As you enter, you'll walk through a series of gates like the 'Badi Pol' and the 'Tripolia Pol' into interconnected courtyards and halls. The architecture is a mix of Rajasthani and Mughal styles, with later additions showing European influences. Inside the complex, the main section is converted into the City Palace Museum. Here, visitors can explore narrow passages that open into opulent rooms like the Sheesh Mahal (Palace of Mirrors) and the Mor Chowk (Peacock Courtyard), famous for its intricate glass mosaics of peacocks. The museum displays a rich collection of royal artifacts, weapons, paintings, and personal items of the Maharanas of Mewar. The upper terraces and balconies provide panoramic views of Lake Pichola, the Lake Palace, Jag Mandir, and the city of Udaipur. The experience is one of stepping back into the lavish lifestyle of Rajput royalty.
