    About the Destination

    Overview

Lonar Crater Lake is a saline and alkaline water body formed by a meteorite impact around 50,000 years ago during the Pleistocene Epoch. Located in the Buldhana district of Maharashtra, it is the only known hyper-velocity impact crater in basaltic rock on Earth. Visitors arrive at the top rim, which provides a sweeping view of the nearly circular depression, before taking a steep hiking path down to the water level. The lake spans roughly 1.2 kilometers in diameter and sits 150 meters below the rim. The shoreline is encircled by a thick forest that houses distinct flora and fauna, including peafowl, macaques, and various migratory birds. The water frequently changes color due to specific salt-loving microalgae, turning a distinct pink hue under certain conditions. Along the 5-kilometer circular trekking path around the lake, visitors encounter numerous ancient stone temples built between the 12th and 13th centuries. The environment at the crater floor is dense, humid, and quiet. Navigating the site requires physical exertion, as the descent and ascent are steep and rocky. The combination of rare geology, extreme microbiology, and medieval architecture provides a highly factual and educational experience for anyone exploring the site.

    Why This Place is Special

    Visitor Tips

    • • Avoid weekends during the winter season to experience the forest with fewer crowds
    • • Carry at least 2 liters of water per person, as there are no shops down at the lake level
    • • Wear sturdy trekking shoes with strong grip; the descent path is steep, loose, and rocky
    • • Hire an authorized local guide from the MTDC resort to safely navigate the trails and learn geological facts
    • • Apply mosquito and insect repellent before entering the dense forest surrounding the water
    • • Do not touch or consume the lake water due to its extreme alkalinity and sulfur content

    Rules & Restrictions

    • • No swimming or bathing in the lake water
    • • No plastic bags, bottles, or littering allowed in the eco-sensitive zone
    • • Do not feed the wild macaques living along the trekking path
    • • No camping or staying overnight near the crater floor
    • • No removal of rocks, soil, or plant materials from the site
    • • No drones allowed without prior written permission from the forest department

    Safety Information

    • • The descent path consists of loose soil and basalt rocks; walk slowly and watch your footing to avoid slipping
    • • Return to the top rim at least 30 minutes before sunset as the forest gets completely dark very quickly
    • • Keep all food securely packed inside bags to avoid attracting the wild monkeys that inhabit the trail
    • • Do not stray from the marked paths, as the surrounding forest is dense and inhabited by snakes and wildlife
    • • Carry ample drinking water (at least 2 liters), as there are no shops or fresh drinking water sources at the lake level
    • • If visiting in summer, start the hike by 6:00 AM and return by 10:00 AM to avoid severe heat exhaustion

    Best Time to Visit

    • November to February is the safest and most comfortable time to explore the crater. Winter temperatures range from 12°C to 25°C, making the steep hike down the rim manageable. Avoid the summer months (March to June) when temperatures often exceed 40°C, drastically increasing the risk of heatstroke during the climb. The monsoon season (July to October) turns the forest bright green and activates the streams, but the muddy trekking paths become highly slippery and difficult to navigate safely.
    • Peak Crowd: November to January, specifically on weekends and school holidays, as the cool weather allows for comfortable trekking.
    • Moderate Crowd: August to October, when nature photographers and researchers visit to observe the post-monsoon greenery.
    • Low Crowd: March to June, due to severe summer heat that makes daytime hiking hazardous and uncomfortable.
