Dainthlen Waterfalls - The Legendary Falls of Cherrapunji

The history of Dainthlen Waterfalls is rooted in local Khasi legend rather than historical records. The name 'Dain-thlen' translates to 'cut the Thlen'. According to folklore, the 'Thlen' was a giant, malevolent serpent that terrorized the local villages. To rid themselves of this menace, the people devised a plan to kill the serpent. After it was slain, they chopped its body into pieces atop the rocks. The deep potholes and markings on the riverbed today are believed to be the scars left by the violent thrashing of the serpent and the tools used to butcher it. This story is an integral part of Khasi culture and is what gives the waterfall its name and unique significance.

Dainthlen Waterfalls holds significant cultural importance for the Khasi people due to the legend of U Thlen. It's more than just a scenic spot; it's a place where a major mythological event is believed to have occurred. For visitors, its natural uniqueness lies in the expansive, potholed rock bed leading to the falls, which is quite different from other waterfalls in the region. Its easy accessibility, located right off the main road to Cherrapunji, makes it a popular stop for tourists exploring the area. It provides a great introduction to the rugged beauty and folkloric traditions of Meghalaya.
