Dal Lake - The Jewel of Srinagar

Dal Lake has ancient origins, with mentions in historical texts dating back centuries. Its modern character was significantly shaped during the Mughal era in the 16th and 17th centuries, when emperors like Jahangir built elaborate gardens such as Shalimar Bagh and Nishat Bagh along its shores. These gardens were designed to overlook the lake, integrating it into their grand aesthetic. The concept of houseboats as accommodation for visitors became popular during the British Raj in the late 19th century. As foreigners were not permitted to own land in Kashmir, they built elaborate floating homes on the lake. After independence, these houseboats became a key part of Kashmir's tourism infrastructure, a tradition that continues today.

Dal Lake is often called the "Jewel in the crown of Kashmir" or "Srinagar's Jewel" for its cultural and economic importance. It is a symbol of Srinagar and a major driver of the local tourism economy, supporting thousands of people, from Shikara wallahs to houseboat owners and handicraft sellers. Its unique ecosystem includes floating gardens (Rad), which are man-made islands of vegetation used for agriculture. The lake's social fabric, with its floating markets and water-based communities, represents a distinct way of life that has existed for generations, making it a living cultural landscape.
