    About the Destination

    Overview

Damdama Lake is a large natural lake located a short drive from Gurgaon, set against the backdrop of the Aravalli Hills. It was originally a rainwater harvesting dam built by the British in 1947. Today, it's a popular weekend getaway for people from Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR). The area around the lake serves as a hub for picnics and various recreational activities. Visitors will find numerous operators offering adventure sports like rock climbing on the nearby cliffs, zip-lining, and commando net courses. The lake itself is the main attraction, with options for paddle boating, motor boating, and kayaking available for hire from different points along its shore. The atmosphere is generally lively and busy, especially on weekends, with families and corporate groups spread out across the area. While not a quiet retreat, it provides a break from the city with its open spaces and water-based activities.

    Visitor Tips

    • • Visit on a weekday morning to avoid the heavy crowds that gather on weekends and public holidays.
    • • Carry sufficient cash as mobile networks can be unreliable and most local vendors and boat operators do not accept digital payments.
    • • Wear comfortable shoes suitable for uneven terrain, especially if you plan to walk around the lake or try rock climbing.
    • • Bring sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses, as there is limited shade in the open areas around the lake.
    • • Negotiate prices for boating and other activities before starting, as rates can vary between vendors.
    • • For a more organized experience, consider booking a day package with one of the nearby resorts which often includes meals and a set of activities.
    • • If visiting for birdwatching, the best time is from October to March, early in the morning.
    • • Pack your own water and snacks, though local food stalls selling corn, tea, and packaged items are available.

    Rules & Restrictions

    • • Swimming in the lake is generally prohibited and unsafe.
    • • Do not litter
    • • carry your trash back or use designated bins.
    • • Avoid venturing into isolated areas, especially after dusk.

    Safety Information

    • • The terrain around the lake is uneven and rocky
    • • wear sturdy footwear to avoid slips and falls.
    • • Do not attempt to swim in the lake as the depth is variable and there are no lifeguards.
    • • Keep an eye on your belongings, especially in crowded picnic spots.
    • • If engaging in adventure sports, ensure the operator provides proper safety gear and instructions.
    • • Mobile network coverage is poor in the area, so inform someone of your whereabouts beforehand.
    • • Avoid visiting after sunset as the area is not well-lit and can be unsafe.
    • • Stay hydrated, especially during warmer days, by carrying enough water.

    Best Time to Visit

    • The best time to visit Damdama Lake is from October to March when the weather is pleasant and ideal for outdoor activities. Temperatures during these months range from 10°C to 25°C. This period also coincides with the arrival of migratory birds, making it perfect for birdwatching. Avoid the peak summer months of April to June, when temperatures can exceed 45°C, making it too hot for daytime excursions. The monsoon season (July to September) replenishes the lake but can make the surrounding terrain muddy and slippery.
    • Peak Crowd: Weekends (Saturday-Sunday) and public holidays from October to February, due to pleasant weather and holiday rushes.
    • Moderate Crowd: Weekdays from October to March, and weekends during the monsoon season (July-September).
    • Low Crowd: Weekdays during the summer months (April to June) due to the extreme heat.
