Devikulam - Serene Hill Station near Munnar

Devikulam's history is deeply rooted in local legend, specifically the epic Ramayana. It is believed that the goddess Sita bathed in the local lake, giving the place its name and sacred status. Beyond mythology, the area's modern history is linked to the development of tea cultivation in the Western Ghats during the British colonial period in the late 19th century. Like the rest of Munnar, Devikulam was developed into a vast tea-growing area. Today, it remains part of the extensive estates managed by large tea companies and is a popular stop for tourists exploring the Munnar region.

Devikulam's primary significance is two-fold. Religiously, it holds importance for Hindus due to its association with the goddess Sita and the Ramayana, making Sita Devi Lake a place of reverence. Environmentally, it is a key part of the Munnar landscape, showcasing the iconic tea-covered hills of the Western Ghats. For visitors, its significance lies in its relative quietness and unspoiled natural beauty, offering a more peaceful experience compared to the main town of Munnar. The lake's water is also believed to have curative properties due to its mineral content.
