Overview

The Don Bosco Museum, officially the Don Bosco Centre for Indigenous Cultures, is a comprehensive institution dedicated to preserving and showcasing the diverse cultures of Northeast India. Housed in a unique seven-story hexagonal building, the museum takes visitors on a journey through the traditions, lifestyles, and heritage of the region's many indigenous communities. Each floor is dedicated to a specific theme, with 17 well-curated galleries displaying artifacts, costumes, tools, weapons, and intricate dioramas.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit is from September to May when Shillong's weather is pleasant and comfortable for sightseeing. Autumn (September-November) offers clear skies and mild temperatures. Spring (March-May) is also ideal with blooming flora. Avoid the monsoon season from June to August, as heavy rainfall can disrupt travel plans. Winter (December-February) is cold but manageable with warm clothing and offers a chance to experience the city with fewer tourists.
Peak Crowd: October-November and March-May, especially on weekends and public holidays, due to peak tourist season and pleasant weather.
Moderate Crowd: December-February and September, particularly on weekdays.
Low Crowd: June-August, as the heavy monsoon season significantly reduces tourist footfall.

How to Reach

Air

The nearest major airport is Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (GAU) in Guwahati, Assam, about 100 km away. From there, it's a 3-4 hour drive to Shillong by taxi or shared cab. Shillong also has a smaller airport at Umroi (SHL), 30 km away, with limited flight connectivity.

Train

The nearest major railway station is Guwahati Railway Station (GHY), which is well-connected to all major cities in India. From the station, you can hire a taxi or take a shared cab or bus to Shillong, which takes about 3-4 hours.

Road

Shillong is well-connected by road via NH6 from Guwahati. Regular government and private buses, as well as shared taxis and private cabs, ply between Guwahati and Shillong. The journey is scenic and takes approximately 3 hours.

Local Transport

Within Shillong, the museum can be reached by hiring a local taxi or an auto-rickshaw. Shared taxis are a popular and economical mode of transport. Ride-hailing services are also available.
