Overview

Doodhpathri, which translates to 'Valley of Milk', is a large, bowl-shaped meadow situated in the Budgam district of Jammu and Kashmir. Unlike more developed tourist spots, it offers a more raw and expansive natural landscape. As you arrive, you are greeted by vast stretches of green grass, which in spring are dotted with wildflowers. A key feature is the Shaliganga river, which flows through the middle of the valley, its water looking milky as it rushes over stones, which is said to be the origin of the area's name. The meadows are surrounded by dense pine forests on the hillsides, with the snow-capped peaks of the Pir Panjal range visible in the distance.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Doodhpathri is from May to September. During these months, the weather is pleasant, with lush green meadows and clear skies. This is the ideal time for picnics, trekking, and pony rides. From late October, the weather starts getting cold, and from December to March, the valley is covered in heavy snow, often making the roads inaccessible. The spring season (April-May) is beautiful with blooming wildflowers, while the autumn season (September-October) offers a different landscape with golden-hued grasses.
Peak Crowd: May to August, particularly on weekends and public holidays when local families and tourists visit during summer vacation.
Moderate Crowd: April, September, and October during weekdays.
Low Crowd: November to March due to heavy snowfall, cold weather, and potential road closures.

Air

Srinagar International Airport (SXR) is the nearest airport, located about 45 km away. From the airport, it takes approximately 2 hours to reach Doodhpathri by car.

Train

The nearest railway station is Srinagar (Nowgam), about 40 km away. However, for visitors from outside Kashmir, Jammu Tawi Railway Station is the major railhead, located about 300 km away.

Road

Doodhpathri is well-connected by road from Srinagar, a distance of about 42 km. The drive takes around 1.5 to 2 hours via Budgam and Khansahib. The roads are scenic but can be narrow in some sections.

Local Transport

The most common and convenient option is to hire a private taxi from Srinagar for a day trip. The cost for a round trip usually ranges from ₹2500 to ₹3500. Shared taxis are a cheaper alternative but are only available up to certain points, requiring another local taxi for the last leg.
