A unique two-tiered bridge grown from living tree roots, accessible via a challenging 3,500-step trek through the forests near Cherrapunji.
Discover what makes this destination truly special

The Double-Decker Living Root Bridge in Nongriat village is a remarkable example of bio-engineering by the local Khasi people. This is not a constructed bridge, but a living one, grown from the roots of the Ficus elastica (rubber) tree. Over decades, villagers have guided the aerial roots across the Umshiang River, creating a sturdy, two-tiered pathway that strengthens with time. Reaching this bridge is an adventure in itself, involving a trek of approximately 3,500 steps down into a valley from the starting point in Tyrna village. The trail winds through dense tropical forest, passing smaller root bridges and rickety suspension bridges, offering an immersive experience into the region's unique landscape.
