    About the Destination

    Overview

Edakkal Caves are not technically caves but a natural rock shelter formed by a massive split in a huge rock. Located on Ambukuthi Hills, reaching the site requires a moderately strenuous trek of about 1.5 kilometers uphill, including steep stone steps. The journey itself offers expansive views of the surrounding coffee plantations and landscape. Inside, there are two main chambers. The lower chamber is smaller, leading to the upper one which is the main attraction. This larger chamber houses a collection of ancient petroglyphs, which are rock carvings, not paintings. These carvings depict human figures, animals, tools, and abstract symbols. The atmosphere inside is cool and dimly lit, creating a sense of stepping back in time. Visitors will experience a combination of physical activity during the climb and a deep sense of history while observing the well-preserved rock art, which provides a unique window into prehistoric life in the region.

    Why This Place is Special

    • • Neolithic and Mesolithic era petroglyphs (rock carvings)
    • • Being a natural cleft or rock shelter, not a true cave system
    • • A steep trek of about 1.5 km to reach the entrance
    • • Pictorial writings believed to be 6,000 to 8,000 years old
    • • Panoramic views of the Wayanad landscape from the viewpoint
    • • Two distinct chambers within the main rock formation
    • • Connection to ancient civilizations through its unique symbols
