Gavi, Thekkady - An Eco-Tourism Experience in Periyar Tiger Reserve

Gavi does not have an ancient historical background. Its prominence as a tourist destination grew from the Gavi Eco-Tourism Project, a community-focused initiative by the Kerala Forest Development Corporation (KFDC). The project was designed to protect the region's fragile ecosystem while providing a sustainable livelihood for local communities, including rehabilitated former poachers who now work as guides and forest protectors. It gained international attention after being featured by 'Alistair International' as a leading eco-tourism center. The project serves as a model for how tourism can support conservation efforts and benefit local populations, shifting the area's narrative from resource extraction to preservation.

Gavi's significance lies in its successful model of conservation-focused, community-based eco-tourism.
