Overview

The Sri Harmandir Sahib, commonly known as the Golden Temple, is the most important spiritual site of Sikhism, located in the city of Amritsar. The temple itself is a two-story structure, with its upper floor covered in pure gold leaf, which gives it the famous name. It is situated in the middle of a large man-made pool called the Amrit Sarovar, or Pool of Nectar. Visitors walk along a marble causeway, the Guru's Bridge, to reach the main shrine where priests and musicians continuously chant from the Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikh holy book.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit is from October to March when the weather is cool and pleasant, with temperatures ranging from 5°C to 20°C. This period is ideal for sightseeing. The summer months from April to June are very hot, with temperatures often exceeding 40°C. Monsoons last from July to September. Visiting during Sikh festivals like Vaisakhi (April), the birthday of Guru Nanak (November), or Diwali offers a chance to see the temple beautifully illuminated, though it is extremely crowded.
Peak Crowd: October-December, weekends, and on Sikh festivals (Gurpurabs) and national holidays.
Moderate Crowd: January-March and August-September on weekdays.
Low Crowd: April-July on weekday mornings due to the extreme heat.

How to Reach

Air

Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport (ATQ) in Amritsar is the nearest airport, located about 13 km away. It takes around 20-30 minutes to reach the temple by taxi or cab.

Train

Amritsar Junction (ASR) is the main railway station, well-connected to major Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata. The station is about 2 km from the temple. Auto-rickshaws and taxis are available at the station.

Road

Amritsar is well-connected by road via National Highway 3, National Highway 54, and the Grand Trunk Road. Regular government and private bus services run from Delhi (450 km), Chandigarh (225 km), and other cities in North India.

Local Transport

Auto-rickshaws are the most common mode of transport within the city. Cycle-rickshaws are good for shorter distances. App-based services like Ola and Uber are widely available. A free bus service also runs between the railway station and the temple.
