    About the Destination

    Overview

Great Sand Dunes National Park features the tallest sand dunes in North America, rising against the rugged Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The 30-square-mile dunefield provides a desert-like landscape surrounded by alpine lakes, forests, and wetlands. Visitors can hike anywhere on the open dunes, as there are no designated trails on the sand. During late spring and early summer, Medano Creek flows at the base of the dunes, creating a wide, shallow beach environment for wading. Camping at the park is a primary draw for visitors. The main Piñon Flats Campground offers immediate access to the dunefield and unobstructed views of the night sky. The park is recognized as an International Dark Sky Park, making it an excellent location for stargazing. Backcountry camping directly on the dunes or along the 4WD Medano Pass Primitive Road provides an immersive outdoor experience. Daytime activities center around hiking, sandboarding, and sand sledding.

    Visitor Tips

    • • Visit the dunes early morning (before 10 AM) or late afternoon, as sand temperatures can reach 150°F (65°C) midday
    • • Rent specific sandboards or sand sleds outside the park in Alamosa or at the Oasis store; regular snow sleds and cardboard do not work
    • • Book Piñon Flats Campground up to 6 months in advance through Recreation.gov, as spots fill immediately
    • • Carry at least one gallon of water per person per day, sun protection, and a hat due to high altitude and intense sun
    • • Check the National Park Service website for Medano Creek current flow levels, which peak between late May and early June
    • • Deflate your tires to 20 psi before driving the Medano Pass Primitive Road to avoid getting stuck in deep sand
    • • Plan for strong afternoon winds; secure your camping gear and protect camera lenses from blowing sand

    Rules & Restrictions

    • • No driving standard vehicles off paved roads without high clearance and 4WD
    • • Pets must be kept on a leash at all times (maximum 6 feet)
    • • Pets are not permitted in the backcountry dunefield area or inside the visitor center
    • • No drones allowed anywhere within the national park boundaries
    • • No gathering firewood within the park; buy local firewood to prevent pest introduction
    • • No glass containers allowed near Medano Creek or on the dunefield

    Safety Information

    • • Sand temperatures can exceed 150°F (65°C) in summer; wear sturdy shoes and avoid hiking the dunes at midday
    • • Lightning strikes are a severe threat on the dunes during afternoon thunderstorms; seek shelter in a hard-topped vehicle if clouds build
    • • The dunefield sits at 8,200 feet elevation; drink plenty of water and pace yourself to prevent altitude sickness
    • • Keep a safe distance from wildlife, particularly mule deer and black bears, which frequent the campground areas
    • • Store all food, trash, and scented items in bear-proof lockers provided at the campsites
    • • Winds can reach over 40 mph; protect your eyes with sunglasses or goggles and shelter camera equipment

    Best Time to Visit

    • Late May to early June is the peak season for Medano Creek, offering water flow for wading and pleasant temperatures (15-25°C). September to October provides cooler weather, golden aspen foliage in the mountains, and fewer crowds. Avoid midday visits in July and August due to dangerously hot sand temperatures exceeding 65°C. Winter brings snow to the dunes, creating striking photography opportunities but extremely cold camping conditions.
    • Peak Crowd: May to August, especially weekends and holidays, due to Medano Creek flowing and summer school vacations
    • Moderate Crowd: September and October, drawing visitors for fall foliage and cooler hiking conditions
    • Low Crowd: November to March, when freezing temperatures and snow deter most campers and casual visitors
