    About the Destination

    Overview

The Group of Monuments at Hampi are the ruins of Vijayanagara, the former capital of the vast Vijayanagara Empire. Spread over 40 square kilometers, this UNESCO World Heritage site is set in a surreal landscape dominated by large granite boulders and the Tungabhadra River flowing through it. Visitors experience a journey back in time while exploring the remains of palaces, temples, markets, and military structures. The site is broadly divided into two main areas: the Sacred Centre, which includes the still-functioning Virupaksha Temple and other religious structures along the river, and the Royal Centre, which contains the remnants of palaces, administrative buildings, and royal enclosures like the Lotus Mahal and Elephant Stables. Exploring Hampi involves a lot of walking or cycling through this ancient city, discovering magnificent structures like the Vittala Temple with its famous stone chariot and musical pillars. The atmosphere is one of awe, where history and nature are completely intertwined, making it feel like an open-air museum.

    • • Rent a scooter or bicycle to cover the vast area efficiently. Auto-rickshaws can also be hired for a full-day tour.
    • • A coracle ride on the Tungabhadra River offers a unique perspective of the ruins.
    • • Hire a licensed guide at the main ticket counter to understand the history and stories behind the monuments.

    Rules & Restrictions

    • • Do not climb on the ancient ruins or walls.
    • • Photography is restricted inside the sanctum of some active temples.

    Best Time to Visit

    • The best time to visit Hampi is from October to February. During these winter months, the weather is pleasant and dry, with daytime temperatures ranging from 20-30°C, perfect for exploring the expansive ruins. The summer, from March to June, is extremely hot and best avoided. The monsoon season, from July to September, brings greenery to the landscape but intermittent rains can disrupt sightseeing plans and make the rocky paths slippery.
    • Peak Crowd: December to January, long weekends, and during the Hampi Utsav festival (usually in November or January).
    • Moderate Crowd: October, November, and February when the weather is still good but holiday crowds have thinned.
    • Low Crowd: March to September, due to the extreme summer heat followed by the monsoon season.
