History

Originally called 'Gaurimarg' or the 'meadow of Gauri', it was a pastoral area for local shepherds. In the 16th century, Sultan Yusuf Shah Chak of the Chak Dynasty was so captivated by its beauty that he renamed it Gulmarg, meaning 'Meadow of Flowers'. The British later developed it as a holiday resort during their rule in India, establishing ski clubs and the golf course. For decades, its scenic beauty has also made it a popular location for filming Bollywood movies. Today, it stands as a year-round resort managed by the Jammu and Kashmir government, attracting tourists from across the globe.

Significance

Gulmarg is significant primarily for its natural beauty and its status as a top-tier adventure sports destination. It holds one of the most prominent ski resorts in Asia, with powder snow and slopes that attract international skiers. The Gulmarg Gondola is one of the highest operating cable cars in the world, making Apharwat Peak accessible for both sightseeing and skiing. Its high-altitude golf course is another unique feature. For many, Gulmarg represents the quintessential mountain escape, offering a peaceful environment in summer and thrilling snow sports in winter, making it a vital part of Kashmir's tourism.
