Overview

Hampi Bazaar, also known as Virupaksha Bazaar, is a historic street market located directly in front of the Virupaksha Temple. Stretching for nearly a kilometer, this street was once the heart of Hampi's commercial and social life during the Vijayanagara Empire, where merchants traded in gold, gems, and horses. Today, the bazaar offers a glimpse into its past glory with its long, colonnaded stone pavilions lining both sides. While many of the original structures are ruins, the street is alive with activity.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit is from October to February when the weather is cool and pleasant, with temperatures ranging from 15°C to 30°C. This period is ideal for exploring the open-air site comfortably. The summer months, from March to June, are extremely hot and best avoided. The monsoon season, from July to September, sees rainfall but also turns the landscape lush green, offering a different experience for those who don't mind the wet weather.
Peak Crowd: November to January, weekends, and during festivals like Hampi Utsav, when the weather is most favorable.
Moderate Crowd: October, February, and March on weekdays.
Low Crowd: April to September due to the extreme heat of summer and the monsoon rains.

How to Reach

Air

The nearest airport is Vidyanagar Airport (VDY), approximately 40 km away (a 1-hour drive). Hubli Airport (HBX), around 165 km away, is a larger airport with better connectivity.

Train

Hospet Junction (HPT) is the closest railway station, located 13 km from Hampi. It has good connectivity with major cities like Bengaluru and Hyderabad. Auto-rickshaws and taxis are available from the station.

Road

Hampi is well-connected by road. KSRTC and private buses operate frequently from Bengaluru (350 km), Hyderabad (375 km), and other nearby cities to Hospet, from where you can take a local bus or auto to Hampi.

Local Transport

The best way to explore Hampi Bazaar is on foot. For other monuments, you can hire auto-rickshaws for a full or half-day tour. Renting a bicycle (₹150/day) or a scooter (₹300-500/day) is also a very popular option.
