Hampi Bazaar - Historic Market of the Vijayanagara Empire

Hampi Bazaar flourished from the 14th to the 16th century as the primary commercial center of the Vijayanagara Empire's capital. It was a well-planned marketplace where merchants from across the world traded in precious goods like diamonds, pearls, silk, and brocades. The stone pavilions that line the street served as sophisticated shops. Following the defeat of the Vijayanagara Empire in the Battle of Talikota in 1565, the city was plundered and abandoned, and the bazaar fell into ruin. In recent times, it has been partially revitalized and now functions as the main hub for tourists, blending its rich history with contemporary local life.

As a central part of the Hampi Group of Monuments, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Hampi Bazaar holds immense historical and architectural importance. It is a prime example of the urban planning and commercial architecture of the Vijayanagara period. The layout, with its direct axial alignment to the main temple, demonstrates the integration of religious and commercial life. For visitors, it's significant as it provides a tangible connection to the city's past grandeur while remaining a functional part of the modern Hampi experience, serving as a gateway to many key monuments.
