History

The Hill Palace was constructed in 1865 by the Maharaja of Cochin. It served as the official residence and administrative office of the Cochin Royal Family. Over the years, the complex was expanded with the addition of new blocks and facilities. After the end of royal rule, the palace was taken over by the Government of Kerala in 1980. It was subsequently converted into a museum and opened to the public in 1986. The museum is currently managed by the Department of Archaeology and preserves a vast collection of artifacts belonging not only to the Cochin royals but also from other parts of Kerala's history.
