Hosdurg Fort - The Historic Laterite Fort of Kasargod

The Hosdurg Fort was built in the mid-17th century by Somashekhara Nayak of the Ikkeri dynasty, who also constructed other forts in the region like Bekal. The name 'Hosdurg' translates to 'New Fort' in the Kannada language. It served as a key administrative and military center for the Nayaka rulers. Following the decline of the Ikkeri dynasty, the fort saw control shift to Hyder Ali of Mysore and subsequently to the British East India Company. Today, the fort's grounds are home to various government offices, integrating its historical past with the administrative functions of the present day.

Hosdurg Fort's primary significance lies in its architecture, representing the Ikkeri Nayaka dynasty's construction style using local laterite stone. It stands as a historical testament to the region's past political and military landscape. What makes it particularly unique is the presence of the Nithyanandashram within its walls, which contains 45 caves carved from a single rock.
