Idagunji Temple - Ancient Ganesha Shrine near Murudeshwar

The temple's origins are rooted in ancient Hindu mythology, dating back to the Treta Yuga. According to legend, sages performing rituals in a nearby forest faced obstacles from demons. To find a solution, Sage Narada advised them to worship Ganesha. The deity was pleased and decided to stay in this place, which came to be known as Idagunji. The temple is considered one of the six important Ganesha pilgrimage sites on the west coast of India. While the idol is believed to be ancient, the temple structure has been renovated over the centuries to accommodate the growing number of pilgrims, yet it retains its traditional coastal architectural style.

Idagunji Temple is one of the most important religious sites in coastal Karnataka, attracting over a million devotees annually. Its primary significance lies in the unique 'dwibhuja' (two-armed) Ganesha idol in a standing posture, holding a lotus bud and a modaka. This form is rare and considered highly sacred. The temple is a major 'kshetra' (a holy place) where devotees perform special poojas and seek blessings for success and removal of obstacles. Its inclusion in the circuit of six prominent west-coast Ganesha temples further elevates its religious status for pilgrims.
