Indo-Portuguese Museum: Kochi's Christian Art Heritage

While the idea of a museum dates back to 1910 under Bishop José Gomes Ferreira, the current Indo-Portuguese Museum was brought to fruition through the vision of Dr. Joseph Kureethra, a former Bishop of Cochin. Concerned about the neglect and potential loss of priceless church artifacts, he initiated the project to safeguard this unique heritage. The museum was officially opened to the public in the year 2000. It is housed in a modern building constructed within the historic compound of the Bishop's House, specifically designed to preserve and display these significant items for future generations to appreciate.

The museum holds immense significance for its role in preserving the tangible history of the Indo-Portuguese Christian community in Kerala. It is one of the few places that exclusively documents the artistic and cultural fusion between European and Indian traditions in Christian art. The artifacts on display, gathered from churches across the Diocese of Cochin, are crucial evidence of the region's colonial past and the evolution of religious art forms. It serves as an important center for understanding the history of Christianity and Portuguese influence on the Malabar Coast.
