    About the Destination

    Overview

Jahaz Mahal, which translates to 'Ship Palace', is a former pleasure palace located in the Mehrauli area of Delhi, next to a large reservoir called Hauz-i-Shamsi. Built during the Lodi dynasty in the 15th century, its name comes from the striking reflection it creates in the adjacent water body, resembling a ship anchored at the shore. The structure is a two-story building constructed with local quartzite stone, decorated with blue tiles and detailed carvings, though much of the ornamentation has faded over time. Visitors can explore its central courtyard, surrounded by chambers and arched corridors. The palace features several impressive chhatris (domed pavilions) on its roof, which offer wide views of the surroundings. The atmosphere here is generally quieter than at Delhi's major monuments, allowing for a more relaxed exploration of its architecture and history. It's an important part of the larger Mehrauli Archaeological Park complex.

    Why This Place is Special

    • • Lodi-era Sultanate architecture
    • • Its distinct reflection in the Hauz-i-Shamsi reservoir

    • • Combine your visit with other nearby sites like Jamali Kamali Mosque, Balban's Tomb, and the Qutub Minar complex.
    • • Be careful on the stairs and rooftops as some areas lack safety railings.
    • • During the Phool Walon Ki Sair festival (Sept-Oct), the area becomes very lively and is a great time to experience local culture.

    • • Carry a fully charged mobile phone. Network connectivity is generally good in the area.
    • • While less crowded, stay aware of your belongings and surroundings.
