    About the Destination

    Overview

Jawahar Kala Kendra (JKK) is a multi-arts center in Jaipur, conceived to preserve and promote the various art forms of Rajasthan and India. Designed by the renowned architect Charles Correa in 1986 and completed in 1991, its structure is a modern interpretation of Jaipur's original city plan. The design is based on the Vastu Purusha Mandala, a nine-square grid that corresponds to the nine planets of Vedic astrology. One square is intentionally left open to the sky, symbolizing the void or the spirit. Visitors walking through JKK experience a series of interconnected courtyards and buildings made of striking red sandstone. Each of the eight blocks houses different facilities, including art galleries like Sukriti and Sudarshan that host contemporary and traditional art exhibitions, museums displaying cultural artifacts, a library with a vast collection of books on art and culture, and several auditoriums for theatre and music performances. The central open-air amphitheater, called Madhyavarti, is a focal point for cultural events. The atmosphere is calm and creative, offering a quiet escape from the city's noise, and is a popular spot for artists, students, and thinkers.
