Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium - Bangalore's Gateway to the Cosmos

Established in 1989 by the Bangalore City Corporation, the Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium was created to spread awareness and knowledge about astronomy and science among the public, especially students. It is administered by the Bangalore Association for Science Education (BASE). Over the years, the planetarium has undergone significant upgrades, most notably the installation of a state-of-the-art hybrid projection system in 2017. This system combines a traditional opto-mechanical projector with digital projectors, offering a highly realistic and immersive viewing experience. It continues to be a key center for non-formal science education in the city.

The Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium holds significant educational value in Bangalore. It plays a crucial role in making astronomy accessible and interesting for the general public, particularly children. Its unique hybrid projection system is one of the few in the country, providing a superior visual experience that helps simplify complex cosmic phenomena. The planetarium is more than just a show venue; it actively promotes scientific temper through workshops, lectures, and amateur astronomy sessions. For decades, it has served as an important landmark for both education and intellectual recreation in the city.
