Jhari Waterfalls, often called Buttermilk Falls, is a multi-tiered cascade located on a private coffee estate near Chikmagalur. The water flows down a steep, rocky cliff, creating a wide and thin curtain-like effect, which gives it its nickname. To reach the falls, visitors must take a mandatory, bumpy 4x4 jeep ride for the last few kilometers, as the path is not suitable for regular vehicles. This jeep journey through the dense greenery of the coffee plantations is an adventure in itself.

Best Time to Visit

The ideal time to visit Jhari Waterfalls is from September to February. During this post-monsoon period, the waterfall is at its fullest, and the surrounding landscape is vibrant and green. The weather is cool and comfortable for the jeep ride and short walk. Summer months from March to May see a significant reduction in water flow. The peak monsoon season (July-August) can make the jeep path slippery and unsafe, so it is often best avoided.

Air

Mangalore International Airport (IXE) is the nearest airport, located about 170 km away. From the airport, it takes approximately 4-5 hours to reach Chikmagalur by taxi.

Train

Kadur Junction (DRU), about 60 km away, is the nearest major railway station with good connectivity. Chikmagalur also has a small station (CMGR) but with fewer trains. Taxis are available from the stations to the city.

Road

Chikmagalur is well-connected by road to major cities like Bengaluru (245 km), Mangalore (150 km), and Mysuru (175 km). Regular KSRTC and private buses operate from these cities.

Local Transport
