Jog Waterfall - India's Majestic Plunge Waterfall in Karnataka

Jog Waterfall is a natural formation and has existed for centuries as a feature of the Sharavathi River. Its modern history is closely tied to the development of hydroelectric power in the region. In 1964, the Linganamakki Dam was constructed upstream on the Sharavathi River. This dam is a key part of the Mahatma Gandhi Hydro-electric Project and now controls the flow of water to the falls. Before the dam, the falls were rain-fed and had a more consistent flow throughout the year. Today, the water volume is regulated, which significantly reduces the flow during the dry season. The site has been developed by the Karnataka Tourism Department with viewing platforms and basic amenities to manage the large number of tourists who visit annually.

Jog Waterfall holds significance primarily for its natural grandeur. As one of the highest plunge waterfalls in India, it is a major natural landmark in the country and a top tourist destination in Karnataka. The sight of the four distinct cascades dropping into the valley is unique. Its seasonal transformation, from a gentle segmented fall to a powerful single torrent during monsoons, adds to its appeal. The falls are also integral to the region's ecology and power generation, being the primary source for the Sharavathi Hydroelectric Project, which supplies a significant amount of electricity to Karnataka.
