Kabini Dam - A Scenic Viewpoint on the Kabini Reservoir

The Kabini Dam was constructed in 1974 by the Government of Karnataka. The primary purpose behind its construction was to manage the waters of the Kabini River for large-scale irrigation in the surrounding agricultural areas of Mysuru and Chamarajanagar districts. It was also designed to provide drinking water and control floods downstream. Over the years, the reservoir has become an integral part of the local ecosystem, especially for the wildlife in the adjacent Nagarahole and Bandipur forests. Its function remains unchanged, serving as a vital lifeline for both the human and animal populations of the region.

The Kabini Dam's significance is twofold. For humans, it is a critical piece of infrastructure, providing water for agriculture and domestic use to a large part of southern Karnataka. For the environment, its massive reservoir is the lifeblood of the Nagarahole National Park. During the dry summer months, the receding waters create lush grassy banks, attracting large herds of Asiatic elephants, deer, and gaur, which in turn attract predators like tigers and leopards. This makes the reservoir's periphery one of the best places in India for wildlife viewing.
