The Kabini Dam, also known as the Kabini Reservoir Project, is a large dam built across the Kabini River, a major tributary of the Cauvery. Located near Beechanahalli village, this concrete gravity dam creates a huge reservoir that is the area's main attraction. Visitors come here to see the vast expanse of water that stretches to the horizon, often with the forested hills of the Western Ghats in the background. The primary experience is the view from the dam top or the adjacent road, offering a panoramic look at the collected water and the surrounding landscape.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit is from September to May. Post-monsoon months (September to December) offer lush green landscapes and a full reservoir. The winter season (December to February) has very pleasant weather, ideal for sightseeing. The summer months (March to May) are hot, but this is the best time for wildlife sightings as animals congregate near the water, making it a prime time for safaris in the adjacent park. Avoid the peak monsoon season (June to August) due to heavy rainfall.
Peak Crowd: Weekends and public holidays between October and January, when the weather is pleasant.
Moderate Crowd: Weekdays from September to March, and weekends during the summer months.
Low Crowd: Weekdays during the summer and monsoon seasons (April to August).

Road

The dam is well-connected by road from Mysuru via the Mananthavady Road. It is about 220 km from Bengaluru. Hiring a car or taxi is the most convenient way to travel.

Local Transport

Local transport is sparse. It is highly recommended to have a private vehicle or a hired taxi for the entire trip, as finding autos or buses for the return journey can be difficult.
