Overview

The Kameng River is a powerful waterway that carves its way through the mountains of Arunachal Pradesh. Originating from a glacial lake in the Tawang district, it flows through deep gorges and dense forests before meeting the Brahmaputra in Assam, where it's known as the Jia Bhoreli. For travelers on the Tawang circuit, the river is a constant companion, especially on the stretch between Bhalukpong and Dirang. Its water is remarkably clear and blue-green, changing in intensity with the seasons.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit the Kameng River is from October to April. During these post-monsoon and winter months, the weather is pleasant, the skies are clear, and the river's water level is stable and ideal for adventure sports like rafting and kayaking. The monsoon season, from June to September, should be avoided as the river becomes dangerously swollen and the risk of landslides on the roads is high.
Peak Crowd: October-November and March-April, coinciding with the main tourist season for Tawang.
Moderate Crowd: December-February, when it's colder but still popular.
Low Crowd: June-September, during the monsoon season when travel is difficult and water activities are suspended.

Air

The nearest major airport is Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (GAU) in Guwahati, Assam (approx. 260 km to Bhalukpong). A smaller airport is at Tezpur (TEZ), Assam (approx. 52 km to Bhalukpong), with limited connectivity.

Train

The nearest major railway station is Guwahati (GHY). The closest station is Rangapara North (RPAN) in Assam, about 45 km from Bhalukpong, the entry point to the region.

Road

Bhalukpong, the gateway to the Kameng region, is well-connected by road from Guwahati (5-6 hours) and Tezpur (1.5 hours). From Bhalukpong, the main highway to Tawang runs parallel to the river for a significant distance.

Local Transport

Shared taxis (Sumo/Bolero) and private cabs are the primary modes of local transport for traveling between towns. Hiring a private vehicle for the entire Tawang circuit is the most convenient option for tourists.
