Kangaroo Island is a premier wildlife sanctuary in South Australia featuring free-roaming native animals, rugged coastlines, and expansive national parks.
Kangaroo Island is located off the coast of South Australia and is globally recognized for its native animal populations and rugged coastal landscapes. Visitors reach the island via a 45-minute ferry ride from Cape Jervis or a short flight from Adelaide to Kingscote. More than a third of the island's landmass is dedicated to protected nature reserves and national parks. The terrain shifts dramatically from the white sands of the northern beaches to the dense bushland and steep, weather-beaten cliffs along the southern coastline. At the western end sits Flinders Chase National Park, home to distinct geological formations like the Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch. Traveling along the south coast, visitors can walk among a wild colony of Australian sea lions at Seal Bay. The island supports dense populations of kangaroos, koalas, echidnas, and diverse bird species. The layout is expansive, requiring a vehicle or guided tour to navigate the large distances between key observation areas and townships like Penneshaw and Kingscote.
