Kerala Kalamandalam - The Home of Kathakali in Thrissur

Established in 1930 by the visionary poet Vallathol Narayana Menon, along with his associate Manakkulam Mukunda Raja, Kerala Kalamandalam was conceived as a center to revive and preserve Kerala's traditional performing arts, which were facing a decline. Starting in a small building, it focused on providing systematic training in Kathakali and Mohiniyattam. Over the decades, it grew in stature, adding more art forms to its curriculum and gaining government support. In 2006, it was granted the status of 'Deemed to be University for Art and Culture' by the Government of India, recognizing its immense contribution to the cultural heritage of the country.

Kerala Kalamandalam is a globally recognized institution for its role in the preservation and propagation of Kerala's classical performing arts. It is the foremost center for learning Kathakali and Mohiniyattam. Its significance is further elevated as it is a key training ground for Koodiyattam, a classical Sanskrit theatre form recognized by UNESCO as a 'Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity'. The institution has produced generations of legendary artists who have carried these traditions to international stages, making it a vital cultural hub not just for Kerala but for all of India.
