History & Significance

Learn about the story and cultural importance of this destination

History

Established in 1951, Khan Market was named in honor of Khan Abdul Jabbar Khan, a freedom fighter and the brother of Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan. It was originally set up as a neighborhood market for refugees who had migrated from the North-West Frontier Province after the Partition of India. The initial design included flats above the ground-floor shops for the resettled families. Over the decades, it transformed from a local community market into one of India's most prestigious and expensive retail locations. It retains its U-shaped layout and some of its original family-run businesses, standing as a testament to post-partition development in Delhi.

Significance

Khan Market's significance lies in its unique position as a cosmopolitan social and commercial hub in the heart of Lutyens' Delhi. It's not just a place to shop but a landmark that reflects the city's modern, affluent culture. It is important for housing several legacy businesses, particularly iconic bookstores that are cherished by Delhi's literary community. Its blend of high-end Indian and international brands with cozy cafes and fine dining restaurants makes it a consistently popular meeting point for locals and the expatriate community, setting it apart from the city's more traditional markets.
