December to February (Summer) brings daytime temperatures of 15-22°C and peak blooming season for the famous Russell Lupins. Train

There are no direct train lines to Lake Tekapo. The nearest major railway station is in Christchurch, from where you must rent a car or take a coach bus.

Road

Located directly on State Highway 8. It is a scenic 3-hour drive from Christchurch (via State Highway 1 and 8) or from Queenstown (via State Highway 6 and 8). Daily coaches and tour buses run these routes.

Local Transport

The town is very compact and easily navigated on foot. Walking tracks connect the village to the lakefront and hot pools. Guided tour companies provide shuttle vans to the observatory. Bicycle rentals are available in the village for exploring the lake margins.

The lakefront and outdoor areas are open 24 hours a day. Guided stargazing tours usually start 1-2 hours after sunset. The Church of the Good Shepherd is typically open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Yes, photography is highly encouraged, and night photography is a major draw. However, no photography is allowed inside the Church of the Good Shepherd, and drones are strictly regulated near the observatory and church.

Visit during the spring (September to November) or autumn (March to May). To photograph the church without crowds, arrive before 8:00 AM. Weekdays outside of school holidays are the quietest.

Lake Pukaki is 45 km away (30-minute drive). Mount Cook National Park is roughly 100 km away (1 hour 15 minutes), making it an easy day trip. The Mount John Observatory is just 8 km up the hill from the township.
