Lower Aguada Fort - Historic Sea Fort in Goa

Built by the Portuguese between 1609 and 1612, the Aguada Fort complex was a critical defense structure. Its main purpose was to guard the Mandovi estuary from Dutch and Maratha fleets. The lower fort provided the first line of sea-level defense, with its cannons covering the waterway. It was also a vital replenishment stop for ships, housing a large freshwater cistern. For a significant part of its modern history, a section of the lower fort served as the Aguada Central Jail, one of Goa's largest prisons, which ceased operations in 2015. The site is now being preserved as a historical monument and tourism center.
