Malankara Dam is an irrigation dam built across the Thodupuzha River, creating a vast artificial lake known as the Malankara Reservoir. Located near the town of Thodupuzha in the Idukki district, it has become a popular local spot for evening outings and weekend picnics. The main feature for visitors is the long walkway across the top of the dam, which provides an expansive view of the calm reservoir on one side and the river's downstream path on the other. The surrounding area is green and generally quiet, making it a good place to relax away from city noise.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Malankara Dam is from September to March. During these post-monsoon and winter months, the reservoir is full, the surrounding vegetation is lush, and the weather is pleasant for outdoor activities. Summers, from April to May, can be very hot and humid. While the monsoon season (June to August) offers beautiful green landscapes, heavy rainfall can sometimes disrupt your visit.
Peak Crowd: Weekends (Saturdays and Sundays), public holidays, and during the winter school vacation period (December-January).
Moderate Crowd: Weekday afternoons, especially from September to November.

Cochin International Airport (COK) is the nearest airport, located about 65 km away. From the airport, you can hire a taxi to reach the dam, which takes around 2 hours.

Train

The nearest major railway station is Aluva (AWY), approximately 60 km away. Ernakulam Town (ERN) and Ernakulam Junction (ERS) stations are also viable options, around 70 km away. Taxis and buses are available from these stations to Thodupuzha.

Road

Malankara Dam is easily accessible by road from Thodupuzha town (7 km). It is located on the Moolamattom route. KSRTC and private buses connect Thodupuzha with major cities in Kerala like Kochi, Kottayam, and Thrissur.

Local Transport

From Thodupuzha town, auto-rickshaws are the most convenient way to reach the dam. Local buses plying the Moolamattom route also stop near the dam entrance.
