Malankara Dam, Idukki - A Guide to the Scenic Reservoir

The Malankara Dam was constructed as a part of the Muvattupuzha Valley Irrigation Project (MVIP), primarily to harness the tail-race water from the Moolamattom Power House of the Idukki Hydroelectric Project. The construction began in the late 1980s and the dam was commissioned in 1994. Its main purpose has always been irrigation, controlling water flow to support agriculture in the nearby low-lying regions of Ernakulam, Kottayam, and Idukki districts. Over the years, recognizing its potential due to the scenic reservoir, the District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) Idukki developed the area by adding a park and other basic amenities, transforming the functional dam site into a recreational destination for locals.

The primary significance of Malankara Dam is its role in the region's agriculture, providing a consistent water supply for irrigation across several districts. From a tourism perspective, it is significant as an accessible leisure spot for the residents of Thodupuzha and surrounding towns. It represents how a functional engineering project can also serve a recreational purpose for the community.
