Overview

Marayur is a distinct village located in a rain shadow region about 40 kilometers from Munnar. Unlike the surrounding tea plantations, this area has a drier climate and a completely different landscape. The village is primarily known for being the only place in Kerala where sandalwood trees grow naturally in a forest. Visitors can experience the aroma of sandalwood while driving through certain protected stretches.

Best Time to Visit

The ideal time to visit Marayur is from September to March. During these months, the weather is pleasant and comfortable for sightseeing. The post-monsoon period leaves the landscape green and fresh. The summer months from April to May can be quite hot and dry. While the monsoon season from June to August makes the area scenic, heavy rains can sometimes disrupt travel plans and make walking around difficult.

Air

Cochin International Airport (COK) is the nearest major airport, about 150 km away (4-5 hours drive). Coimbatore Airport (CJB) is another option, around 115 km away (3-4 hours drive).

Train

The nearest major railway stations are Aluva (AWY) at 150 km and Ernakulam Junction (ERS) at 170 km. Coimbatore Junction (CBE) at 110 km is also a convenient railhead.

Road

Marayur is located on State Highway 17, which connects Munnar (40 km) and Udumalpet in Tamil Nadu. It is easily accessible by car or bus from Munnar.

Local Transport

For getting around Marayur to see the scattered sights, it is best to use a hired car or a local auto-rickshaw. Buses are available for point-to-point travel on the main road but are not ideal for sightseeing.
