Masjid Dastgeer Sahib - A Revered Sufi Shrine in Srinagar

The original Dastgeer Sahib shrine was constructed in 1806. It was built to house a sacred relic of the Sufi saint Sheikh Syed Abdul Qadir Jeelani, which was brought to Kashmir by a spiritual leader. For over two centuries, it stood as a remarkable example of Kashmir's traditional wooden architecture. Tragically, the historic structure was completely destroyed in a fire in June 2012, leading to widespread grief. The shrine was subsequently reconstructed with community and government support, aiming to replicate its original design while incorporating modern safety features. The current structure, while new, continues its legacy as a principal place of worship and pilgrimage in the Kashmir Valley.

Dastgeer Sahib holds immense religious importance for Kashmiri Muslims, particularly those who follow the Sufi tradition. It is a center of faith dedicated to one of the most venerated saints in Islam. The shrine's cultural significance lies in its architectural style, which showcases traditional Kashmiri craftsmanship like Khatamband woodwork and papier-mâché art. It acts as a spiritual hub for the community, drawing large crowds during the annual Urs (commemoration) of the saint and for Friday prayers. Its resilience, demonstrated by its reconstruction after the fire, symbolizes the community's enduring faith.
