History & Significance

Learn about the story and cultural importance of this destination

History

The temple's origins are linked to the Mahabharata era, associated with Kripi, the wife of Guru Dronacharya. It is believed she devoted herself to caring for sick children in the village. After her death, the villagers built a shrine in her honor, and she came to be worshipped as Sheetala Mata. The current temple structure was constructed in the 18th century by Maharaja Bharatpur, Suraj Mal, to honor his victory over the Mughals. The temple is managed by the Shri Mata Sheetla Devi Shrine Board, which was constituted by the Haryana government.

Significance

This temple is a major 'Shakti Peeth' (seat of divine power) in the region. Its primary significance lies in the widespread belief in Sheetala Mata's ability to protect children and cure ailments. The temple holds immense cultural importance for the people of Haryana, Delhi, and surrounding states. The annual Chaitra Mela is one of the largest religious fairs in the area, reinforcing its status as a key pilgrimage destination. Many Hindu families bring their newborns here for their first tonsure ceremony (Mundan Sanskar), seeking the goddess's blessings for a healthy life.
