Mawsynram, a village in the East Khasi Hills of Meghalaya, holds the Guinness World Record for being the wettest place on Earth. The experience here is dominated by the near-constant presence of rain and mist, especially during the monsoon. This immense rainfall shapes the entire landscape, creating a world of vibrant, deep green vegetation, countless seasonal waterfalls, and roaring streams. The village itself is simple, with houses often soundproofed with grass to dampen the deafening sound of rain on their tin roofs. Visitors will see locals using traditional 'knups', which are turtle-shell-shaped rain shields made from bamboo and leaves.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit depends on your goal. To experience the peak monsoon and see Mawsynram in its rainiest glory, visit between June and September. For more pleasant weather, clearer skies, and lush post-monsoon greenery, the months from October to May are ideal. During this period, temperatures are comfortable, and travel is easier as the risk of road blockages from landslides is lower. The waterfalls are still full just after the monsoon ends in October and November.
Peak Crowd: June-September, when rain enthusiasts and tourists visit to experience the peak monsoon season.
Moderate Crowd: October-January and on weekends, which is the main tourist season for Meghalaya.
Low Crowd: February-May, during the relatively drier months before the monsoon arrives.

Air

The nearest airport is Shillong Airport (SHL) in Umroi, about 86 km away (3-4 hour drive). The larger and better-connected airport is Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (GAU) in Guwahati, Assam, which is around 170 km away (5-6 hour drive).

Train

The nearest major railway station is Guwahati (GHY), approximately 170 km away. From Guwahati, you can hire a taxi or take a shared cab to Shillong, and then another vehicle to Mawsynram.

Road

Mawsynram is well-connected by road from Shillong, which is about 60 km away. The drive takes about 2-3 hours. You can hire a private car or take a shared taxi from Shillong. The roads are scenic but winding and require careful driving, especially in monsoon.

Local Transport

Within Mawsynram, most places are accessible on foot. To visit surrounding attractions, you will need to hire a local taxi. There are no app-based cab services like Ola or Uber available in the village.
