Murdeshwar Temple - Home of the Majestic Shiva Statue

The history of Murdeshwar is linked to the epic Ramayana. According to legend, the demon king Ravana, a devout follower of Shiva, obtained the Atma-Linga (the soul of Shiva) for immortality. The gods, worried about his power, tricked him into placing it on the ground at this spot. Once placed, the linga could not be moved. In anger, Ravana tried to uproot it, breaking it into pieces and throwing the cloth covering it onto Kanduka Hill. The modern temple complex, including the massive Shiva statue and the Raja Gopura, was constructed and financed by businessman and philanthropist R. N. Shetty, transforming it into the major pilgrimage and tourist destination it is today.

Murdeshwar is a significant pilgrimage center for Shaivites, revered as one of the five sacred Shiva Kshetras along the Karnataka coast. Its primary religious importance comes from housing a piece of the original Atma-Linga. Beyond its spiritual value, the site is an architectural landmark due to the 123-foot Shiva statue and the 249-foot Raja Gopura, one of the tallest in the world. Its unique location on a peninsula provides a dramatic backdrop, making it a distinct destination where religious devotion meets natural coastal beauty.
